The Boardwalk at Wrest Point opened its doors for the first time on Friday, 31 May, bringing to life one of the biggest waterfront developments Hobart has seen in recent years.
The opening fell just past the 12 month anniversary of the extreme weather event that inundated much of southern Tasmania, including the old Pier One restaurant. It represents an investment of more than $10 million by Federal Group and is part of Managing Director Greg Farrell’s broader vision for Wrest Point’s future.
The new venue has a café, bar, bistro, entertainment, gaming and live sport. The bistro seats more than 200 indoors and 40 on the deck, and the cafe atrium comfortably seats 90.
Dominic Baker, General Manager of Wrest Point said that The Boardwalk would come alive as a family-friendly destination, dishing up great quality and value.
“It goes without saying that the views will be the main attraction, and the big staircase that used to occupy much of the space has made way for a beautiful three-storey atrium space that houses a café and lounge seating. We’ve opened the place right up to be light and bright,” he said.
“Real estate like this should be accessible and welcoming – and that’s exactly what we intend to do: welcome people to enjoy friendly service and great value in one of the best locations in Hobart.
The new Bistro features a carvery, burgers and a grill, catering to dietary requirements with specialised gluten and dairy free menus.
“This is a year-round venue, with al fresco dining on the deck during the summer months, and natural light and warmth in the atrium during winter,” Mr Baker said.
“It’ll be somewhere to grab a coffee or a bite to eat before catching one of our free ferry rides to the footy at Blundstone, a safe and comfortable venue for family get-togethers, or to grab a burger and beer after knock-off.”
The Boardwalk is one of several construction projects underway at Wrest Point. Another three floors of the hotel are currently being redeveloped, resulting in 10 floors of deluxe rooms before year end. The Onyx Bar is also currently being refurbished.
